Academic Paper Writing: A Learning Experience

Abstract

In academic world, doing research and writing papers are crucial in academic career accomplishment and professional development. Publishing good papers abet an academic gaining recognition in the academic world. However, we should or may already realize that writing a good research paper can be a daunting task, and often, we are not certain what should be included and how the information should be conveyed. A well-planned and well-written paper conveys effectively to readers our research ideas and research findings. With an over thirty-years of research commitment in academic world, this talk aims to share with you my personal experience, view and opinion in academic paper writing. The talk will primarily focus on the following key issues and essential aspects: (1) How to plan your research paper; (2) What are the proper structures of a research paper; (3) What are the unwritten rules for writing a research paper; (4) What are the actual writing steps; (5) What are the things to do before, during, and after your writing; (6) What are the things to avoid in paper writing; and (7) What are the proper ways to respond to the reviewer’s comments.

 

Biography

Professor Liew is Chair Professor of Civil Engineering in City University of Hong Kong. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Modeling in Mechanics and Materials, and International Review of Civil Engineering. He was the Head of Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering from 2011 to 2017 at City University of Hong Kong, a tenured Full Professor at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), and the Founding Director of Nanyang Center for Supercomputing and Visualization (Singapore). Over his academic career, he has authored/co-authored over 750 SCI journal articles. Professor Liew is listed by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) as Highly Cited Researcher in Engineering. His publications have been cited over thirty-thousand times and achieved an h-index of 86 according to Google Scholar. To date, Professor Liew has attracted over US$45 million research and development funds from government funding agencies, industries and higher-learning institutions. He has graduated over 50 PhD students and supervised over 70 Post-doc fellows.
